Why buyers seek business records

The internet is familiar to these labs, but your company's operating routines aren't.

Public text is what AI models learned from. The web can't show how your business prices a quote, resolves a claim or reschedules a shipment. That know-how lives in your inbox, shared drive and operating systems. Google's successful $10 million bid for Spirit Airlines' records shows the market, while firms far smaller have received hundreds of thousands. Review evidence from the market.

Questions to consider first

What owners commonly ask on their first call

Is the payment genuine, or is this only a pitch?

This is an active market. The licensing partner reports payments of $350,000 to $650,000 to firms with 60 to 100 people, while Google's $10 million winning bid for Spirit Airlines' records is documented in a federal court filing. These transactions involved other firms, not us. You receive your offer in writing before committing, and many firms receive offers below those amounts.

Would I have to pay anything?

There's no charge at any point. Pewter earns a fee from the licensing partner when a transaction closes. Without a deal, no fee is due.

Who handles what, and who pays Pewter?

Pewter identifies and qualifies the opportunity, assesses your records, presents the offer and coordinates the transaction. The licensing partner makes the offer, signs the license with you and pays you; you find out its identity before signing anything. The partner pays our fee, which means we aren't your lawyer or agent. Pewter isn't a law firm or registered broker-dealer, and we recommend that your own counsel review the agreement.

Do I give up my data?

No. You license an agreed, de-identified copy. Your original files stay as they are, and you keep ownership.

Could clients or employees be identified?

Before delivery, names, contact details, account numbers, credentials and payment details are removed or substituted. Regulated, privileged or third-party records may be excluded. Risk can't be eliminated by any method, so you review the process and a sample before signing. How records are handled.

Who may access my records before signing?

Only with your permission. We may request a small sample for quality review before an offer; Pewter or the licensing partner may inspect it. You decide what it includes and may decline. The complete export occurs only after you sign.

Who uses the data, and for what?

Authorized AI developers may use it for model training and evaluation, as your agreement defines. The terms you approve specify exclusivity and permitted uses. Our free owner's guide, Before You Sell Your Data, explains terms and questions to resolve before signing.

How much time will this take from my team?

Set aside a few hours for two or three calls and a brief inventory of the systems you use. If an export is required, your IT person or provider runs it while we coordinate. No new data needs to be created, and nothing needs tidying up.

What if I can't identify the data we have?

That's true for most owners. On the call, tell us which tools you've used over time, such as email, shared drives or your accounting or operating system, and we'll determine what's there. To estimate it on your own first, our complimentary guide points out where to find the numbers in Google, Microsoft 365, Slack and twelve other tools.

Why consider acting now?

AI labs are buying now. A single AI data company has committed $1 billion for the coming twelve months. Value comes from the history you still possess: when subscriptions expire or a firm closes, archives are deleted and that value disappears.

Could your firm qualify?

Signs records may be a fit

  • 20+ staffFull-time employees, now or at your highest headcount.
  • 3+ yearsAt least three years of retained email, files and records.
  • US-basedEnglish is the main working language.
  • Any statusRecords must still exist, whether the business operates, is winding down or has closed.

Demand is strongest for records that trace skilled work through its steps: logistics, accounting, engineering, construction, distribution, manufacturing, trades and professional services. Regulated, privileged or third-party records may be left out. These indicators don't promise an offer.
